We would like to introduce you to one of our graduates of The Coach Certificate and Mentorship Program! With over a hundred graduates since 2019, educators taking The Coach come into the program with different backgrounds, experiences and goals. Because the program is designed to be flexible and practical in nature, each graduate is able to customize their learning experience for exactly their needs – with the support of a mentor and the global community the whole way!
The Coach follows the Thrive Model for Sustainable Instructional Coaching, a proven framework for success in developing your coaching practice – for you as an individual coach and for your coaching program in your school. These educators have graciously given us permission to post some of their learning and reflections from the private coursework they are undertaking during this program.
Meet Melissa
Melissa joined The Coach because she knew that she wanted to work more with my colleagues and have a bigger impact outside of my classroom without moving into an admin role.
At the start of the program, she had no experience with instructional coaching, and had everything to learn. She kept an open mind and learned so much, she was able to help her school in implementing a coaching program.
Through the course she learned more and more, and at the same time, her school was becoming more interested. While she was getting more serious about it, so was the school.
The school eventually ended up joining her on the journey and hired Melissa as an instructional coach right after she graduated from The Coach!
Melissa says…
In The Coach, we followed the Thrive Model. Since my school is in the clarity space, most of my focus was on that. Everything that I did was really practical for what I needed, and for what my school needed. Using the Thrive Model really gave me a path for thinking about where I am now and where I need to go now. All of the milestone artifacts were almost like a path to get me to where I am now.
Thinking for me and for my school, using the thrive model really gave me a path for thinking about where I am now and where I need to go now. All of the milestone artifacts were almost like a path, there were always options depending on your experience or your school’s level, allowed me to see where I could go next.
Watch Melissa’s Learning Journey Video Reflection
The Learning Journey Video Reflection is a chance for you to reflect on everything you’ve learned and/or discovered throughout this Certificate Program. You will create an 8-10 min video sharing on the goal that you set, documenting the process of working towards your goal, reflecting on your achievement and sharing the process/outcome with our learning community. The most important part of your personal project is that it’s relevant to you, and you can demonstrate, through documentation and video, the impact your work has had on your school.
Now that she’s graduated, Melissa says…
I have grown so much! I have learned so much about coaching through this program. I think the biggest area of growth for me is being more reflective of my own practice in order to better understand what my next step should be. Sometimes understanding what you don’t know, helps you to see where you should go next!

Learn More About Melissa’s Experience in The Coach
Melissa was recently featured on the #coachbetter podcast in a Case Study episode.
These case study episodes are designed to share the story of a coach, and the development of their coaching program and practice in their unique setting. At the time of recording, Melissa had just graduated from The Coach. In this episode we talk about how Melissa started her journey to instructional coaching, why she thinks coaching is right for her school, right now, how her school leaders made the decision to implement a coaching program, the vision for the coaching program at her school, her “aha moments” in The Coach, the successes she’s already had with coaching – as a classroom teacher, and what schools and teachers should consider when begining an instructional coaching program. If you’re curious about what classroom teachers can learn in The Coach, and how they begin to build a coaching culture even before starting their role as an instructional coach this episode is for you!
