We want to give you a peek inside our Coach Certificate & Mentorship Program. Coaches taking part in this academic-year-long journey have graciously given us permission to post some of their learning and reflections from the private coursework they are undertaking during this program. Where possible, we have shared the course and the action task to give context for the guest post.
The Coach Mid-Point Reflection
The Topic: Mid Point Reflection: Around half way through The Coach program, we ask participants to reflect on their journey so far. The purpose behind this task is to help them acknowledge how far they’ve come and prepare them for the Personal Project at the very end of the program.
The Task: Create a 3-5 minute video reflecting on your journey so far within The Coach. Share your responses to the prompts below: Reflect on your growth and, in our private community forum (link below) please reflect on and share your thoughts using the prompts below:
- Think back to the initial goal(s) you set for yourself at the beginning of this program. Have your goals changed? If so, briefly explain how/why?
- What has impacted your thinking so far?
- In what ways have you grown so far?
- What are continued areas of growth for you?
- What are you excited about?
- What documentation have you collected? What do you still need to collect?

Reflection by Cate Jarvis,
Have your goals changed? If so, briefly explain how/why?
When I started this program I was very lost and to be fair my goals displayed this. I was thinking more in terms of what I needed to do to pass this course. I think this is something that Education instils in us, what are the success criteria? How will I secure a pass? What do they want me to do? I remember my first conversation, discussing the end project is dismay, as I had no idea where I wanted to go. However, my overriding goal then, as it is now, is to develop the coaching program at the high school to better support the amazing staff that I work with. As I have developed through the course I would also like to develop my voice (for those who know me that might sound strange as I am very opinionated and “loud”) so that I can articulate the potential roles that a coach can have in school. I still have the “imposter syndrome” but I feel that I now have more of a personal vision and the tools needed to start to make it into, some kind of, reality. I would also like to add that, as I have wandered through this course, I no longer think of what I need to pass. I think is terms of how can I use this, how can I improve my own performance…and that is very refreshing. It truly has been a voyage of self discovery.
What has impacted your thinking so far? In What ways have you grown?
Having the space to think and reflect has impacted my thinking. It is something that is key in the coaching cycle but, we often do not give ourselves the time and space to do this. I have also been impacted by the different coaching tools. I would not say they are all new, but looking at them in depth has given me the space to really “dig” into what they mean for me in practice and how I can tweak/change/adapt my approaches for the different scenarios – it has given me more depth and breath to my coaching.

What are continued areas of growth for you?
This is simple. Use the concepts and ideas that I reflected upon through this course to become a better coach and deepen the coaching experience that I deliver. Have more confidence in my own ability and advocate for coaching whenever possible. Try and build a path so that when I get “lost” again, I have a route out of any madness!
What are you excited about?
I am excited about coaching. I still feel like an imposter. I still feel like I have loads of work to do to develop my role. However, I know I have a good relationship with the staff and I would like to use this as a spring broad to develop coaching in the High School. Also, as corny as it sounds, I love to learn so I am excited to try and implement the skills I have learnt into my coaching experiences and learn more about coaching.
What documentation have you collected? What do you still need to collect?
My idea for my final project is a “letter” to my new principle. Where we are now and where I think coaching could go. In terms of documentation, I have not collected much as I would like to use much of the work that I have done here and examples of work that I already do, and have easily at hand. I would like to have some quotes from my colleagues, so need to find time to ask them some questions – though I do have some feedback on the questionnaires that I have sent out.
