We want to give you a peek inside our Coach Certificate & Mentorship Program. Coaches taking part in this academic-year-long journey have graciously given us permission to post some of their learning and reflections from the private coursework they are undertaking during this program. Where possible, we have shared the course and the action task to give context for the guest post.

The Coach Mid-Point Reflection

The Topic: Mid Point Reflection: Around half way through The Coach program, we ask participants to reflect on their journey so far. The purpose behind this task is to help them acknowledge how far they’ve come and prepare them for the Personal Project at the very end of the program.

The Task: Create a 3-5 minute video reflecting on your journey so far within The Coach. Share your responses to the prompts below: Reflect on your growth and, in our private community forum (link below) please reflect on  and share your thoughts using the prompts below:

  • Think back to the initial goal(s) you set for yourself at the beginning of this program. Have your goals changed? If so, briefly explain how/why?
  • What has impacted your thinking so far?
  • In what ways have you grown so far?
  • What are continued areas of growth for you?
  • What are you excited about?
  • What documentation have you collected? What do you still need to collect?

Think back to the initial goal(s) you set for yourself at the beginning of this program. Have your goals changed? If so, briefly explain how/why?
My initial goal was to develop my foundational coaching skills by starting with Strategic Design and Planning (SDP), as explained by Elena Aguilar. These coaching behaviors include conversation planning, work planning, ZPD and gradual release, use of data, feedback on coaching and sense of impact. I continue to work on these skills but I think now it’s at a deeper, more focused level.

What has impacted your thinking so far?
The opportunities to apply my learning from each lesson in the course and then reflect on my personal goals has definitely impacted my thinking. I have increased my knowledge and ability to grow based on my reflections. This cycle of learning has resulted in me being more aware and intentional in my coaching moves.

In what ways have you grown so far?
My main area of growth is in coaching conversations, including planning and listening. I’m now consistently writing up plans for coaching conversations using data to inform the coaching cycle, gathering feedback on my coaching and starting to get a sense of my impact. In terms of listening I’m now much more intentional about letting the teacher talk, paying attention to the teacher’s body language as well as my own nonverbal cues.

What are continued areas of growth for you?
I need to continue to work on setting goals with teachers incorporating the use of data into coaching conversations more often. While I am beginning to move between different coaching stances, I would also like to work on being more intentional about which ones I choose as well as trying to use a more facilitative approach with teachers, using activities like role playing or metaphorical thinking.

What are you excited about?
I am excited about continuing my learning journey! I have progressed a lot and need to continue. I’m at a point where I can be more focused in targeting my goals by using specific resources as well as implementing certain strategies.

What documentation have you collected? What do you still need to collect?
I have collected feedback from teachers about my coaching as well as my impact. I have also collected data on my listening vs. speaking during conversations. I still need to collect data on how I use data with my coachees to inform our coaching cycles, Specifically how I engage teachers in analyzing, responding to and reflecting on the data they collect and using that to inform subsequent coaching conversations.
