We want to give you a peek inside our Coach Certificate & Mentorship Program. Coaches taking part in this academic-year-long journey have graciously given us permission to post some of their learning and reflections from the private coursework they are undertaking during this program. Where possible, we have shared the course and the action task to give context for the guest post.

The Coach Learning Journey Video Reflection

The Learning Journey Video Reflection is a chance for you to reflect on everything you’ve learned and/or discovered throughout this Certificate Program.  You will create an 8-10 min video sharing on the goal that you set, documenting the process of working towards your goal, reflecting on your achievement and sharing the process/outcome with our learning community. The most important part of your personal project is that it’s relevant to you, and you can demonstrate, through documentation and video, the impact your work has had on your school.

“I have developed a greater awareness of myself as a ‘coach’ and how I am choosing my language when working with teachers either to be consultive, collaborative, or a coaching stance. Prior to the program, I didn’t realize that coaches could use those three stances, and now I am able to recognize when I am using which one and try to push myself to use more of a coaching stance…. My learning has helped me to have a greater understanding of my role and provide greater consistency in the support I am providing. I am hopeful that starting fresh next year, I am going to continue to be able to build on my learning from this year and build an even stronger growth-focused culture within my team.”

What goals did you set for yourself at the beginning of the program?

As I was transitioning into a new role, I wanted to understand how coaching could be utilized as a tool to add to my toolkit to support school growth and professional growth within my team. I also wanted to find strategies to make sure that collaborative planning time was used as effectively as possible, so everyone would leave feeling like it was the best use of their time.

How did each milestone support you in reaching your goal?

The milestones were all so customizable that I was really able to tailor them to meet my specific needs. I found that they helped to consolidate my learning from the phase and have something tangible to represent my learning.

What has been your biggest area of growth in the program?

I have developed a greater awareness of myself as a ‘coach’ and how I am choosing my language when working with teachers either to be consultive, collaborative, or a coaching stance. Prior to the program, I didn’t realize that coaches could use those three stances, and now I am able to recognize when I am using which one and try to push myself to use more of a coaching stance.

Where do you still have room to grow?

I definitely can continue to grow in my ability to ask the right questions and know when to use which stance. This comes with practice and experience and I feel confident that I have the right resources to help me continue down this path.

What’s YOUR level of coaching mastery?

All coaches go through various stages of coaching mastery. Once you identify where you’re at, you can begin to build the skills needed to move to the next stage.

This quiz is based on real-life case studies compiled from years of working with coaches inside The Coach Certificate & Mentorship Program!

When you receive your results, you’ll also get your matching case study from the STRIVE Case Studies to see where you fit in the stages of coaching mastery.

What surprises and/or challenges have you had along the way?

One of the biggest surprises was that much of the work I was already doing could fall within the coaching umbrella. I thought that coaching was something very specific that only instructional coaches did, but through this program, I have realized that anyone can use these skills.

One of the challenges that I have had along the way is getting overwhelmed by how much there can be to do. I have found that it is most helpful to really breakdown things into small, achievable tasks that move the needle in the right direction, rather than trying to crank the dial.

What would you do differently next time? What did you learn?

I would have loved to do this program with a colleague from my school because I think the power of being able to collaborate would have been fantastic. I think that if there are multiple people working on a coaching program it is essential that there is consistency between the various coaches to provide clarity for everyone.

How did the Coach support you in your learning journey?

It was so helpful to have the program broken down into weekly tasks and frequent check-ins. Coaching was a topic I have been interested in exploring for a few years, but I needed the accountability and support of a structured program in order to dig in consistently.

How has your learning journey inside the Coach impacted your coaching practice & program in your school setting?

My learning has helped me to have a greater understanding of my role and provide greater consistency in the support I am providing. I am hopeful that starting fresh next year, I am going to continue to be able to build on my learning from this year and build an even stronger growth-focused culture within my team.

What is next for your professional learning?

One thing that I wanted to do that hasn’t happened yet is to observe peers that are in coaching roles. I would love to learn from other coaches in action. I would also like to further explore getting feedback from my team and starting to collect data that I can reflect on and refine my approach.
