We want to give you a peek inside our Coaches as Leaders course. Coaches taking part in this course have graciously given us permission to post some of their learning and reflections from the private coursework they are undertaking during this program. Where possible, we have shared the course and the action task to give context for the guest post.
What is your artifact? Why did you choose to create this artifact?
I created a vision board showing how my time as a coach was spent this year and how I hope it will shift over the next few years. I chose this because one of my biggest takeaways from the course is the importance of using data to tell the story—helping leadership and teams understand where we are now and where we want to go with coaching. This is part of building a shared vision for the role coaching can play in our school.
How might you use this artifact in your coaching practice moving forward?
This artifact is a snapshot of that vision. It shows my current reality and where we’re aiming. I’ll use it, along with supporting data, to start conversations with admin and the coaching team about how to adjust my role to better support teachers and students.
What’s circling in your brain right now? What are you still wondering about?
How am I going to get admin on board—especially with new leadership coming in and others who have “always done it this way”? I’ve gathered great ideas in this course, but change is still hard. I’m hoping I can find an ally in the new leadership. Fingers crossed!
Three key takeaways from this program:
1. I have an action plan. And it’s doable!
2. Every school faces challenges with coaching—I’m not alone in this.
3. I’m doing meaningful work, and my year 1 data includes real wins to celebrate.
What’s squaring with you (what makes sense and helps you move forward)?
That data—from my calendar, teacher feedback, and student outcomes—is key to driving change and growing the coaching program.
What’s your guiding star (next step)?
Use all the data I’ve gathered—quantitative, anecdotal, and visual—to help tell the story of coaching at our school. I’ll share that story with teachers and admin to show what’s working and what’s possible.
Coaches as Leaders
If you’re already an experienced coach and you’re ready to build momentum around coaching in your school community by leveraging your informal leadership, join us for our Coaches as Leaders course. With or without the leadership label, coaching is leadership and when coaches are able to look at the school through a macro lens, seeing their coaching program within the whole school system, and recognize their own potential as leaders, they can make an even bigger impact. This course will help you identify and recognize the ways that coaching is leadership, so you can use those skills to lead within your coaching role – and beyond!
