We want to give you a peek inside our Coach Certificate & Mentorship Program. Coaches taking part in this academic-year-long journey have graciously given us permission to post some of their learning and reflections from the private coursework they are undertaking during this program. Where possible, we have shared the course and the action task to give context for the guest post.

The Topic: Phase 1: Find Clarity

The Task: Share your artifact and a written reflection on your learning during this phase.

Coaching is a non-evaluative and personalized approach to professional learning centered on building relationships and fostering a growth mindset. Transparency is critical to cultivating a positive coaching culture in schools, making it essential to communicate the vision, roles, benefits, and impact of coaching. Unlike consulting or collaboration, coaching is a high-impact form of professional development that helps educators deepen their expertise and refine their practices, ultimately enhancing student success.

This module helped me gain clarity about effective coaching by unpacking its practices and beginning to apply my skills with a coachee. As part of this process, I created an artifact titled “A Pathway to Instructional Coaching at IS Manila.”

The layout was intentionally designed to reflect my understanding of the core components of coaching, including vision, definition, benefits, roles, and impact. These elements became more apparent during the module and as I engaged with my coachee. With this artifact, I aimed to highlight the transformative power of coaching and its lasting impact on teachers and students.

Next, I plan to share this infographic with my thought partner, another coach at our school, to ensure my intention for clarity is evident to others. I will also present it to my coachee to gather “user-friendly” feedback. Finally, I intend to use this infographic in a discussion with my lead divisional principal to emphasize the importance of coaching and explore how we can advance the coaching culture in our Elementary school.

Overall, this module helped me become more transparent about my current role as a coach. I primarily work with whole teams or small groups. While this can be effective for implementing strategies and curriculum, it is often not personalized, even if it is differentiated. Through this module, I identified what I need to clarify with administrators to effectively engage more personally with individual coachees in our school. This I believe, will have a lasting impact on our coaching culture and ultimately impact student learning.

Come learn with me!

I help educators, instructional coaches, informal or positional leaders work together to create thriving coaching cultures that improve student learning and build belonging.

Coaching programs based on the Thrive Model, with clarity, consistency and community, can create time and space for educators to feel seen, heard, respected and valued for the experts that they are – creating a sustainable system of educator professional growth that ultimately improves student learning.

For this kind of coaching to thrive we need to focus on both the micro view of your coaching practice and the macro view of your coaching program, so while you’re developing your individual coaching practice you’re also intentionally developing a sustainable coaching culture.
