We want to give you a peek inside our Coach Certificate & Mentorship Program. Coaches taking part in this academic-year-long journey have graciously given us permission to post some of their learning and reflections from the private coursework they are undertaking during this program. Where possible, we have shared the course and the action task to give context for the guest post.

The Coach Final Project

The Final Project is a chance for you to reflect on everything you’ve learned and/or discovered throughout this Certificate Program.  You will create an 8-10 min video sharing on the goal that you set, documenting the process of working towards your goal, reflecting on your achievement and sharing the process/outcome with our learning community. The most important part of your personal project is that it’s relevant to you, and you can demonstrate, through documentation and video, the impact your work has had on your school.

After completing the first survey I set my goal to gain a solid understanding of the role of a coach. I wanted to develop a clearer understanding of how much of my current role was actual coaching. I knew that to coach effectively I needed to develop an understanding of how to listen as a coach and ask questions that promoted teachers to look within to find their own answers. I think there is a real art to being able to hold constructive coaching conversations. When I completed the second survey, I could see movement toward that goal. I am starting to understand the role a bit better and I am enjoying working with teachers to practice questioning skills to help them dig deeper into how they can move toward their goal.

What has impacted your thinking so far?
Having a better understanding of the coaching cycle has helped to provide direction as I work with the teachers. Also, listening to and reading information on coaching conversation has helped me build a better questioning technique.

My main goal was to gain a better understanding of the role of a coach and to gain clarity around how effective I currently was as a coach. This was something I had been trying to figure out for quite some time following an interview with Kim on HOW TO BUILD A CULTURE OF COACHING.

I definitely gained clarity about the coaching role over the past few months, however, I know the journey is not over. Through the course I was able to build a stronger PLC which will be of great value as I move forward in my coaching role. Each of the projects throughout the course helped me to work through many of the questions that I had been asking myself. The biggest challenges I faced were due to how COVID changed my role, however, there were also benefits to needing to change my focus. I think this just reinforces the importance of a coach needing to be flexible and quickly adjust to changing situations.

What were your goals for this microcredential and how did you plan to meet those goals?
My main goal for this course was to simply gain a better understanding of what a “Coach” is. My guiding question is “What is a coach and how much of my current role involves coaching” I have been asking myself for a while whether I empower teachers or enable them. Taking the course and looking critically at how I implement my role is providing me with this insight. Listening to videos, reading coaching material and implementing the coaching cycle has helped me to better understand my guiding questions.

What would success look like if you met your goals? What steps do you think you need to take to reach those goals?
I will be successful when I understand how to coach teachers in a more effective manner and be able to implement the coaching cycle. In doing so, I will help teachers reach their goals and therefore increase student learning. The steps I will need to take will be working with a variety of teachers as a coach using the coaching cycle. I think by practising the role of a coach I will gain greater insight into how I can coach more effectively.

What challenges did you think you and/or your stakeholders might face and how did you plan to overcome those challenges?
The biggest challenge that I faced was COVID. I had set up several meetings and had many plans to coach teachers. However, with COVID meeting times had to be changed and rescheduled. Classes went online and offline without a great notice and a great deal of my time was taken over to support the school in different roles such as helping with testing, covering for sick teachers and meeting with all students at home online. Due to all of the changes I had to completely change my focus as time was running out.

What did you think the impact would be on your school environment as you worked towards and ideally, achieved your goals?
The school environment will change as teachers are able to more successfully meet their teaching goals by reflecting on their practice, identifying areas for growth to improve student learning. I will also be building a culture of coaching at my school as teachers speak to each other about the benefits of being coached.
