We want to give you a peek inside our Coach Certificate & Mentorship Program. Coaches taking part in this academic-year-long journey have graciously given us permission to post some of their learning and reflections from the private coursework they are undertaking during this program. Where possible, we have shared the course and the action task to give context for the guest post.

At the beginning of this program, my goal was to deepen my understanding of coaching leadership and strengthen our Inclusive Education coaching program at HCOS. I was tasked with shifting our program from a consultant model — where coaches primarily solved problems for teachers — toward a coaching model focused on building teacher capacity and transferable skills. I also hoped to bring greater clarity, consistency, and cohesion to our coaching team.

Each milestone supported this growth in different ways. The needs assessment survey helped identify strengths and gaps within our program. Updating our coaching and case manager job descriptions, along with creating a handbook page for teachers, helped clarify roles and expectations, and help us use terminology consistently and with shared understanding. The most impactful milestone was our two-day coaching intensive built around the Phases of the coaching course of clarity, consistency, and community and what they look like in our online setting. During this time, our team took a bit step forward from individual learning and practice toward a more collaborative coaching culture. Each coach identified areas of passion and strength within the program, and we explored collaborative leadership by having coaches “own” and champion specific areas of the program, with the hope to empower the team to be able to propel our coaching program forward into shared practice and vision.

One challenge throughout this process was realizing how gradual culture change can be.

The Coach program significantly supported my learning journey through cohort discussions, mentorship, and opportunities for reflection. The one on one sessions with Kim were particularly valuable for me to help apply the content of the course to my position leading a coaching team, and in our particular online setting.

Ready to create a thriving coaching culture that improves student learning and builds belonging?

Come learn with me!

I help educators, instructional coaches, informal or positional leaders work together to create thriving coaching cultures that improve student learning and build belonging.

Coaching programs based on the Thrive Model, with clarity, consistency and community, can create time and space for educators to feel seen, heard, respected and valued for the experts that they are – creating a sustainable system of educator professional growth that ultimately improves student learning.

For this kind of coaching to thrive we need to focus on both the micro view of your coaching practice and the macro view of your coaching program, so while you’re developing your individual coaching practice you’re also intentionally developing a sustainable coaching culture.

If you’re ready to build this kind of coaching culture in your school community, join us for the Thrive Coaching Certificate program!
